Quick background: As many of my readers will know, I’m a bit of a language lover. I currently speak English, Irish, French and Dutch at varying levels for different reasons, and will ideally be adding German & Spanish to my repertoire over the coming years. I am constantly encouraging my 12 & 13 year old brothers to love (and not fear) language learning too. They are both learning French in school and often complain that it is boring. So I try to incorporate French into our every day lives together in a fun and natural way. I encourage them to practice, make mistakes, and to use their imaginations to come up with easy ways to remember new vocabulary and phrases.
Last night, I spent a bit of quality time with the boys. We chatted about fitness and exercise. I asked them what cardio I should do the following day. Steven suggested running or skipping. I turned to David who looked deep in thought. He looked at me very seriously and said:
David: Do you know how I remember ‘cow’ in French?
At least I know that some of my language learning techniques are rubbing off on them!!
*for those of you not aware, the French word for cow is vache
