Ice-cream was always one of my favourite treats as a child. It’s still my go to dessert, even during this chilly November in Ireland! I was the weird kid who didn’t like birthday cake, so when my special day came around I blew out my candles on a Vienetta. However as I’ve gotten older, ice-cream just doesn’t appear to love me as much as I love it anymore (you know what I’m talking about!) Instead of risking the adverse effects of my favourite highly processed frozen treat, I’ve started making my very own sugar, dairy and guilt-free ice-cream that is just as creamy, sweet and delicious as the real thing!
The secret is frozen bananas.
For those non-banana lovers out there who have just recoiled in fear, do not be afraid. You can hardly taste the banana, especially if you blend in other flavours such as fresh strawberries or chocolate!! There are so many ‘nana ice-cream recipes out there, but the truth is, you really just need to experiment to see what works, and tastes, best for you.
Yesterday, I whipped up some raspberry ice-cream, for my 12 year old brother and I, in less than two minutes. My brother hates the taste of banana anything, yet he loves whenever I make my special ice cream for him. He isn’t crazy about raspberries either but he repeatedly mentioned that it was delicious. Did I mention that we ate it for breakfast too?!
What You Need (serves 2)
3 Ripe Frozen bananas
Handful of Raspberries
– Simply place the frozen bananas and raspberries into a food processor or high powered blender (I used my Nutribullet) and blend until smooth.
-Your ‘nana ice-cream should be the same consistency as soft or whippy ice cream – the best kind in my opinion!
Of course you don’t need to add raspberries. They were just the fruit I had on hand. Other ideas I have tried before are strawberries, hazelnuts, cinnamon, ginger, peanut butter and cacao. If you’re feeling a little indulgent, I’ve heard that Nutella makes for a great addition to this frozen treat!
Dairy free, sugar free and most importantly guilt free, ‘nana ice-cream is great for crushing those sweet cravings naturally. If you haven’t tried it yet, what are you waiting for?!
