Following on from #RealSkinRevolution yesterday, I thought I’d write a post about self-love, well, selfie-love to be exact! We are the selfie-generation. There’s no denying it. We’re all guilty of it. There’s no shame in it. The front facing camera was invented for a reason guys, so I say embrace it.
Apparently (so I’m told) there is a trend on Tumblr at the moment to find your six favourite selfies from Instagram. I was so inspired to scroll through my Instagram pics after reading Victoria’s recent blog, only to find out that I, the selfie-queen, has only instagramed 5 selfies since the start of the year! What?! I know, I can’t get over it either. My instagram consists of coffee, food and architecture pics, with the odd selfie and people photo thrown in for good measure.
So I decided to go back 24 months instead. Searching through all my perfectly filtered images (it turns out I have a penchant for brennan and walden) brought back some incredible memories.
Selfie #1 – July 2012.
This month 2 years ago, I was on a bus to Kinsale on one of the hottest days of the year. For Ireland that is. Bikini on, flower in the hair, sunnies framing the face – I was ready for a day of tanning. This is me thinking I’m being all artsy with my ‘gazing out the window’ pose. I didn’t ‘get’ the whole concept of Instagram yet apparently because there was no caption nor hashtags to accompany this work of art.
Selfie #2 – October 2012.
Caption: Someone’s going out tonight…..!
Well this is a classic selfie if I ever saw one! My first night out with my Master’s class. It was lashing rain, and I was wearing a dress, no tights and fake tan. It was one of the girls’ birthday and we headed to her house to do fun student things like playing drinking games (Kings anyone?!) and then hit the town with a bang. Class-mate bonding at it’s best, but I’m pretty sure I didn’t return home looking like this!
Selfie #3 – October 2012
Caption: All we’re missing is Holly & Shauna 🙂 #graduation #thebradybunch
GRADUATION DAY! Meet my siblings – Steven, Harriet and David! My other two sisters are in Australia and the UK so were not in this fabulous pouty selfie. Yes there are 6 of us kids – we are actually like the Brady Bunch when we are all together! This was taken at the college reception after the ceremony in St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin. As is required for a quadruple selfie, several selfies were snapped before we settled on one that was approved by all!
Selfie #4 – February 2013
Caption: All wrapped up! #selfie #paris
My favourite season is probably Winter, simply because of the outfits I get to wear. Autumn/Winter fashion is my favourite! I love wrapping up and layering to keep warm. I adore hats, scarves and big coats that keep out the chill! I was living in Paris at the time and there was snow. LOTS of snow. This picture was taken mid-walk from Trocadéro Metro station to my apartment around the corner in the 16th arrondissement. This selfie just screams – hey family & friends, don’t worry i’m still alive. p.s hope you’re so jealous that I’m living in Paris right now and you’re not!
Selfie #5 – August 2013
Caption: Hehe #besties #bff #messing #hotelliving
Just looking at this photo makes me giggle. It was taken during a spontaneous, random, prosecco-fueled, mid-week night away in a five star hotel with one of my wonderful friends. The hotel kindly left a complimentary bottle of prosecco in our room on arrival which we promptly (and classily) consumed. We ordered many cocktails, aperitifs and after dinner drinks. We dressed in our robes and slippers, danced on the bed and sang ‘Look at me I’m Sandra Dee’ while acting like we were Rizzo.. to a tee I may add! And best of all, we recorded our shenanigans during our entire stay. I still haven’t plucked up the courage to watch ALL of the footage yet!!
Selfie #6 – January 2014
Caption: Guess what I haven’t taken in a while? #selfie #winter #cold #wool #blonde
This proves that filters make everything better. And that I have become too reliant on snapchat for my selfie-taking-needs as this is my latest Instagram selfie! The reason why I like this particular selfie is not because the picture itself is particularly nice (hello chipmunk cheeks), but because of my best friend’s comment underneath it:
‘You have this crazy look in your eye…..like you’re going to cut off my skin and wear it’
Followed by her boyfriend’s response: #rapeface
Yeah.. we have that kind of relationship!
So there you have it my six ‘favourite’ selfies. It was a fun activity going through all the photos I have posted over the last two years, and the evolution of my hair from blondey-brown to brunette to blonde again. I can officially say that according to Instagram, I am not selfie-obsessed. However my Snapchat followers may beg to differ!
How many selfies have you taken in the last year? Be honest!
